About

By Mark Baldwin, Editor

Let me tell you a little bit about The Rey, and what we – myself and my partners Mark Church and Richard Spiller – aim to provide on a website dedicated to all things Surrey cricket.

County cricket in this country is fighting for its very survival, and sadly fighting in recent years what has seemed to be a losing battle for projection and promotion across a rapidly-changing media landscape.

But CounterPress, the company behind The Rey and a growing network of new cricket and football websites, has decided to try to reverse this trend.

The decline of local and regional newspapers has left a gap in the market for websites such as The Rey to fill. So that’s what we are going to do.

Supporters and followers of Surrey cricket – like the supporters and followers of other clubs – deserve to have a place where they can read about what is happening on and off the field, and see and listen to the views of players and coaches.

It will take a little time, from our launch, to build up site content and awareness, But, particularly once the 2026 season is up and running, we believe we can provide the county's followers with an essential commentary on Surrey cricket.

There are no pop-ups on this site, and no advertisements. Our views are independent of the club, although Surrey are very supportive. Mark, Richard and myself – plus our guest contributors – will comment, analyse, report, inform and hopefully entertain.

Who are we?

Mark Church, as the voice of Surrey cricket for the past two decades and more, needs no real introduction. Most Surrey supporters will know him from his commentary stints on BBC Radio London and he will be producing both audio and video content for The Rey as well as writing regular articles.

Richard Spiller is another passionate follower of Surrey cricket fortunes and was a long-serving sports editor at the Surrey Advertiser before becoming one of those many victims of latter-day local and regional newspaper decline. He will be keeping a close eye on all Surrey teams and also dipping into the county’s strong club scene.

As for myself, Mark Baldwin, I have watched and written on county cricket for more than four decades. I have been a regular at Surrey matches for many years, reporting both for agency and for The Times since the late 1990s. A former cricket correspondent of the Press Association, and a former editor of England’s Test and international programmes in the 2000s, I started out on local papers – working for weekly, regional evening and regional morning titles before moving up to what was then called ‘Fleet Street’.

I will be concentrating on editing the content of The Rey, but I also intend to do my share of the writing. We will all sometimes look back, too, on players and matches past, but for now let’s concentrate on the future. It’s an exciting time for Surrey cricket… and for The Rey.
