Cameron Steel is joining The Rey and will be contributing regularly to our coverage of all things Surrey cricket.

Steel, 30, was forced to retire from professional cricket last month due to a long-standing ankle injury, but the leg-spinning all-rounder has already taken impressive first steps towards forging a media career with well-received columns in The Times' sports pages.

Cam is joining co-editors Mark Church, Richard Spiller and Mark Baldwin – plus our guest columnists, who include men’s head coach Gareth Batty and women’s director of cricket Emma Calvert – in providing insightful and entertaining content for our subscribers to enjoy.

“Surrey County Cricket Club has been my life for the past five years. Now I’m delighted to be joining The Rey and the CounterPress movement,” said Steel.

“While I’d love still to be out there living my dream, being able to watch, write and talk about the guys and girls going to work is the next best thing.

“I hope I can play a small part in helping to galvanise support for the county game.”

Cam will be bringing to The Rey all his ‘inside’ knowledge of the game from more than a decade in professional cricket.

He made his first-class debut for Durham University in 2014 and, soon after signing professionally for Durham in 2017, became at the age of 21 the youngest double-centurion in Durham’s history with an innings of 224 against Leicestershire.

His four seasons at Durham were followed by a short loan spell at Hampshire before he joined Surrey in 2021.

In all, Steel played 66 first-class matches, scoring 2,733 runs and taking 60 wickets, while also making a further 66 white-ball appearances across both formats.

Look out for Cam’s debut on The Rey… it’s coming soon!
