Four days in Cardiff brought just more frustration for Surrey, more disappointment and more alarm among supporters that something is not quite right with this season's approach to County Championship cricket.

Defeat by seven wickets - albeit after a mighty fight to get back into the contest led by skipper Rory Burns's first Championship hundred of the summer - leaves Surrey in seventh place in the Division One table, 25 points adrift of leaders Nottinghamshire.

Burns' team have only a single victory from the first eight games of the campaign, plus two defeats and five draws.
