Surrey’s players have largely had to endure a winter of much frustration and missed opportunities in England colours, but the ICC T20 World Cup now offers the chance of a much-needed uplift in fortunes.

From a sizeable group of Surrey cricketers to have represented England since last September, it has fallen to Sam Curran, man of the series in England’s 3-0 victory in their warm-up matches in Sri Lanka, Will Jacks and Jamie Overton to help the national team to achieve something tangible at the last following the humiliation of the 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia.

For Curran especially there is the added target of trying to repeat his T20 World Cup player of the tournament award in 2022, when England won the tournament by beating Pakistan by five wickets in the final in Melbourne.

And the Surrey all-rounder certainly started well, defending 10 from the final over with a succession of perfect yorkers as Nepal almost caused an almighty upset in England's opening group game in Mumbai. Curran allowed only five runs from the over, including just a single from the last delivery, as a relieved England ran out winners by four runs.
