There was a grim irony that Surrey’s quarter-final defeat in the Vitality Blast on Wednesday should come at Trent Bridge.
It was at Nottingham that they became the first T20 champions – the world’s inaugural domestic competition in a format which has become the tail wagging the global dog – in 2003, five qualifying matches leading to the first Finals Day in which Surrey beat Gloucestershire and then Warwickshire.
