Tom Lawes, compared to a young Chris Woakes by Surrey head coach Gareth Batty on this website three weeks ago, fittingly chose Edgbaston on the new season’s opening day to showcase just what Batty was talking about.

Hitting Rob Yates’ part-time off spin for successive sixes to go sailing past his previous first-class best of 58, Lawes struck a superb 83 from No 8 to help Ben Foakes to rally Surrey from the depths of 65 for six to 328 all out by stumps.
