It will not be difficult for Surrey’s players to recall the way they felt after losing to Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval last September.
Defeat by 20 runs effectively ended hopes of winning a fourth successive Rothesay County Championship title.
The visitors, however, celebrated a hard-won victory – after a classic match in which the top two teams slugged it out over four days – which meant they would be champions for the first time since 2010.
How appropriate then, as they meet at Trent Bridge, that they currently fill the top two places in Division One, Notts having beaten both promotion sides – Glamorgan and, last weekend, neighbours Leicestershire – while Surrey trail their rivals by eight points.
