While Hampshire may disagree, Rahul Chahar’s arrival could not be better timed to pep up Surrey’s faltering Rothesay County Championship campaign.
The Indian leg-spinner made his Surrey debut against them last September and his haul of 8 for 51 in the second innings earned a narrow victory which guaranteed his adopted county runners-up spot – the title was out of their reach by then – in achieving the best-ever figures by a Surrey debutant.
Chahar, who took 10 wickets in the match, has been signed for the final eight Championship matches which takes in the following June match against Glamorgan and then the final half-dozen in August and September.
In 27 first-class matches for Rajasthan and Surrey, Chahar has claimed 101 wickets at 27 runs apiece and will add a much-needed extra dimension to an attack which has struggled to dismiss teams this year. In the six matches so far, Surrey have yet to bowl out the opposition twice, coming closest in their solitary victory with 19 against Sussex, who declared nine down in their first innings.
