When you need a win – as Surrey do with increasing urgency in the Rothesay County Championship Division One – then a trip to Chelmsford is not the most enticing prospect.
Essex have hosted Surrey there 27 times since 1937 and the visitors have come away winners just five times, losing on nine occasions and drawing the other 13 – the last three visits all ending in stalemates in which they emerged with fewer points.
An emphatic 145-run defeat at the hands of champions Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval has left Surrey eighth, just three points above the relegation zone, and battling to stay in Division One is a change of territory after being at the business end of the table for a sustained period.
