Rory Burns was pulling no punches after a 145-run beating by Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval that all but ends Surrey’s realistic hopes of a fourth County Championship title in five years.
The Surrey captain, speaking to The Rey’s Mark Church after the game finished late on day three, said his side “didn’t really lay a glove on them” following his own dismissal for 44 in the first innings.
At the time Surrey were looking in good shape at 84 for two in reply to Notts’ 184 – itself something of a recovery after they had initially slid to 104 for eight – but Burns then sliced a square cut high to third man off Olly Stone.
