New signings have been in short supply for Surrey since last season – but Reece Topley’s return to first-class cricket might just act like one.

The giant left-arm arm seamer has concentrated exclusively on the white ball game for the past four years but – not helped by the toll of injuries which have dogged his career – he has not played for England in ODIs or T20s now for almost 18 months.

Neither will he be engaged in this year’s Indian Premier League or its equivalent in Pakistan, potentially a bonus for Surrey as they bid to recapture the Rothesay County Championship title.

“I’ve dipped in and out of Surrey quite a bit with England, World Cups and IPL, so it’s nice to have everything simplified this year and just be in one place,” said Topley, who is only 32 yet starting his 16th season in the professional game, so young did he start. He first came to notice at 15 as he rose through Essex’s ranks.
