Kick the door down. That’s the instruction from Alec Stewart to his young players as they prepare for the new season.

Before the sound of splintering woodwork and shattering hinges disturbs the Kia Oval – never mind the effect on the new dressing room complex finished 12 months ago – Surrey's director of cricket explains what he means.

“You have to earn the right to play and that’s through weight of performance,” said Stewart.

The established core of a side which won three successive County Championship titles from 2022-24, just missing out to Nottinghamshire last season, begin as favourites to start against Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Good Friday.
