Adam Thomas' stunning century on his first-class debut for Surrey underscored cricket’s great ability to regenerate itself.
It came just over a week after county colleague Cameron Steel reluctantly admitted to being defeated by a leg injury and retired.
Had the fates dictated otherwise, Steel’s combination of sterling batting and leg-spin might have been called in to balance Surrey’s side in their Rothesay County Championship clash with Sussex at the Kia Oval.
As it was, Thomas – a batsman who gets a few overs here and there – got his chance and grasped it beautifully.
