Jordan Clark gives Surrey a five-wicket boost before brave Sussex fightback

It will have come as no surprise to any Surrey supporter that it was Jordan Clark, the giant all-rounder seemingly made of Cumbrian granite, who produced the standout bowling performance of the season so far.
There has, in all honesty, not been many candidates for that accolade in the three high-scoring draws on ultra-flat pitches that preceded the pulsating opening day of Surrey’s Rothesay County Championship match against their southern neighbours Sussex.
But, on a day eventually seized by the remarkable ninth wicket heroics of off-spinning all-rounder Jack Carson and Sussex captain Ollie Robinson, who added 173 and both made memorable centuries from Nos 9 and 10 as the Kia Oval pitch eased considerably once the new ball’s shine and hardness had gone by early afternoon, it was Clark who was initially the talk of a 5,000-plus crowd basking in May Day sunshine.
