Gazing over the Kia Oval from his office at the top of the pavilion, Alec Stewart is relishing being back as Surrey’s director of cricket.

It was two years ago that he announced he would be stepping down to care for his wife Lynn, eventually accepting a part-time role as high performance cricket advisor. Sadly, Lynn lost her brave battle with cancer last April.

Stewart, who had enjoyed a brief frontline role during the Metro Bank One Day Cup last August – especially relishing his work with the younger players aiming for future first team selection – signalled his return to the DoC job when he came home from a trip to Perth in December.

“It’s been a big part of my life and it’s a job I enjoy – if I hadn’t done, I wouldn’t have come back,” he said. “Everyone knows why I stepped back but now I’m able to return to a role which demands 24/7 commitment.
