Surrey’s bid to recapture the Rothesay County Championship has been boosted by the signing of Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar for the final eight matches of this summer's campaign.

Just a week after unveiling Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott's return to the club, in which he will be available to play in the first eight Championship games plus the entirety of the Vitality Blast, the news of Chahar’s signing provides another significant fillip.

The 26-year-old took 8 for 51 in his sole appearance for Surrey last season, ensuring victory over Hampshire in the final Division One match of the summer at the Utilita Bowl.

They were the best first-class figures for a Surrey debutant, overtaking the 7 for 61 claimed by William Mudie way back in 1859.
