Whatever happens on the final day at Edgbaston it has been a chastening first weekend of the season for Surrey’s bowlers.

True, Warwickshire were given a big advantage by winning the toss at the start of the opening Rothesay County Championship – immediately putting Rory Burns’ team on the back foot as they battled to stay afloat against the moving ball.

Burns’ own self-inflicted run out did not help matters, but Warwickshire’s seam attack exploited pitch and overhead conditions to leave Surrey in some disarray at 65 for six before a magnificent partnership of 155 between century-maker Ben Foakes and Tom Lawes led a tough-minded fightback.

Sean Abbott then helped the superb Foakes to add a further three-figure stand as Surrey ultimately reached 328 – but it was when Warwickshire themselves began their own first innings at the start of day two that Surrey’s problems really began.
