Adam Thomas and Nathan Barnwell will be thousands of miles away and back home in England when they find out whether they have finished as the leading performers in this winter's Western Australian first grade campaign.

Thomas, 19, closed his winter playing in Perth by cracking 154 for Mount Lawley, which took him to 909 runs at 69.92 for the campaign, but – like several other Surrey players involved – he will miss the final round of matches.

Thomas and his colleagues report back to the Kia Oval next week to prepare for the new English season, which starts in the first week of April. And so Thomas can only watch from afar to see whether the only batsman in striking distance – Perth's Jonathan Wells, who is on 825 going into the last two-day match – will overtake him.

Either way, it has been a thoroughly satisfying winter for Thomas, who played his early cricket at Guildford before moving to Surrey Championship rivals Ashtead last year. He made 1,254 runs in all matches while down under, also taking 12 wickets.
