The prognosis heading into Surrey’s 50th List A match at Guildford was hardly promising.
Optimism from winning their opening match of the Metro Bank One Day Cup, a victory against Lancashire at Sedbergh School five days earlier, had been drained by losing to Leicestershire by five wickets on Friday.
Added to that was the news that Tiaan Van Vuuren – the South African quick signed to pep up the attack, who had looked decidedly handy in Cumbria before his hamstring gave way after six overs – would be going home.
Yet Surrey produced one of the most resilient performances of recent memory to beat Northamptonshire by six wickets on Sunday, ending a run of seven straight defeats at Woodbridge Road.
