England’s shot at ICC T20 World Cup glory was undone when India beat them by seven runs in a high-scoring and thrilling semi-final featuring no fewer than 34 sixes and some ugly bowling figures.

On a belting pitch in the relatively small Wankhede Stadium playing arena in Mumbai, India’s 20-over total of 253 for seven pipped England’s 246 for seven, despite a wondrous 105 from only 48 balls by an heroic Jacob Bethell.

And, in a tournament that was a personal triumph for Surrey’s Will Jacks, the 27-year-old off-spinning all-rounder produced another fine individual effort. He first took two for 40 from his four overs and then hit a 20-ball 35 that was only ended by a stunning relay boundary catch as England's chase threatened for long periods of their reply.

Jacks, indeed, went into the semi-final as, statistically, the most valuable player in the competition and he has come of age as an international cricketer over the past few months.
