As Surrey and Sussex prepare to do battle over this early May Bank Holiday weekend, it is time to raise a glass to the memory of two special players, Douglas Jardine and the Nawab of Pataudi.
At Winchester College on June 13 – six weeks or so after the Rothesay County Championship fixture starts on Friday at The Kia Oval – plaques will be unveiled to celebrate the lives of two of the most famous Old Wykehamists, and the close families of both alumni are expected to attend.
In 1919 Jardine marked his captaincy of the Winchester XI by scoring 997 runs (averaging more than two hours for each innings he played), the most by a Wykehamist until the Nawab of Pataudi beat it 37 years later.
