As England take on New Zealand at the Kia Oval in the second Rothesay Test, here at The Rey we decided to look at some of the long-standing connections between host club Surrey and the tourists.
Allom’s explosive start
New Zealand’s arrival at Test level, in January 1930, was keenly awaited but it was Surrey’s Maurice Allom who stole the show.
England had two tours that winter, one heading to West Indies and the other on a marathon journey which took in one match in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), five first-class outings in Australia and then on to New Zealand.
