I am sitting writing this with a brand-new notebook in front of me, which can only mean one thing. Another county cricket season is around the corner, and I am about to indulge my love of stats by filling in the first two pages of the notebook with Surrey numbers.

Runs, wickets, highest scores and averages will be lovingly written in freshly drawn columns and then I will be ready for what I think is my 26th season of ball-by-ball commentary on Surrey matches for the BBC.

Broadcasting has changed over those years. I still like to write my stats but now they are all there at a touch of a button on your phone or laptop.

The first Surrey game I commentated on, scorecards were provided by Ceefax page 340, and I had never heard of Wi-fi, X or You Tube. Getting on air was at times a minor miracle and I had a suitcase worth of equipment.
