Give me a blank piece of paper and ask me to write down my Surrey starting XI for County Championship cricket and the first two names are always the same.
The captain, R J Burns, is inked in, and then you might expect an O Pope, D Sibley, J Smith or B Foakes. But for me Jordan Clark would always be the one to follow the captain’s name.
On commentary I often describe him as “the first name on the team sheet after the captain”. Not the catchiest of epithets, I grant you, but it sums up his importance to Surrey and why for me he has been the best allrounder in the championship for the past four years.
Clark arrived at Surrey in 2019 from Lancashire. We had first seen his talent when he struck his maiden first-class century for the Red Rose county at the Kia Oval two years before. He joined another Clarke in the Surrey team (namely Rikki), and you could see Jordan was going to step seamlessly into the big boots of R Clarke when that great Surrey allrounder decided to call it a day.
