Surrey have a mountain to climb over the next two days at the Kia Oval even to avoid defeat against a Glamorgan team inspired by Asa Tribe.
Tribe's 142 not out, spanning seven hours at the crease, underpinned the Welsh county's second innings as they moved to 339 for five by the end of the second day, having begun it on 30 without loss.
It meant Glamorgan led by 356 runs overall at the halfway stage and, despite a clearly easing pitch, Rory Burns' team will have either to chase down a record fourth innings target or - more realistically - face batting for at least a day and a half to salvage a draw.
