Ryan Patel’s masterful 132 kept Surrey’s hopes alive in the morning session of reaching an improbable 612, which would have been a World Record run chase in a first-class game. Alongside Ollie Pope, Patel looked in wonderful touch as they extended their partnership from its overnight 122 to 168 until Pope was caught behind off Zain ul Hasan for 75.
Patel moved to his first championship century of the summer and at the other end Dan Lawrence hardly broke sweat as he started caressing the ball around the Kia Oval. But on the stroke off lunch Mir Hamza found Patel’s outside edge and Ben Kellaway took a terrific catch at backward point.
